What a Small Group Leader Should Be

May 14, 2010 | Comments Off on What a Small Group Leader Should Be

Do you have goals for yourself as a small group leader? How do you see your role? It seems to me that’s something each leader needs to decide before going too far. And it’s probably a discussion you probably need to revisit periodically because it’s easy to get sidetracked.

Sam O’Neal at SmallGroups.com says that, in his opinion, a small group leader should operate as a safari guide, following two seemingly contradictory principles:

Principle 1: Small-group leaders are to be most concerned about the spiritual transformation of their group members.

Principle 2: Small-group leaders are never able to manufacture spiritual transformation within their group members.

I couldn’t agree more. We must do everything we can to help our members become conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. But at the same time, we must avoid playing junior Holy Spirit. Easier said than done.
