A Sanctuary

Do you have a sanctuary for your quiet time? I was praying with a woman today who was concerned that she hasn’t been able to really hear God since moving into a new home. While there are a few circumstances that could contribute, the biggest problem is that she hasn’t created a sanctuary space for her time with God. She’s still roaming, still grazing, and hasn’t created a space for God to settle in her new home.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that space can be made holy and it is made holy by spending holy time in it. When I have my quiet time in the same space every day, that chair, bed, or table begins to almost absorb holiness. It becomes a sanctuary. It beckons to me, calling me out of bed to meet with Jesus.

In the Old Testament, God instructed Moses on the construction of the wilderness tabernacle. He dictated every detail, inside and out. When it was completed, the cloud of glory settled on it so heavily that Moses couldn’t even go in (Ex. 40:34-35). For the next 40 years, the cloud of glory led the Israelites and settled in the tabernacle.

My current holy space is a recliner in my living room, facing outside. I have a basket with a bible, a devotional, pens, a journal, and (very important) a coffee warmer. But these days I use my computer for everything. I wrote about my bible study method in January. I also journal on my laptop. In earlier years, I kept a library of references books next to my bed and would stack my pillows “just so” for my early morning times with Jesus. I would awaken with great anticipation and had amazingly productive hours in prayer and study. Now my living room space is holy. I enter with joy and expectation and I’m never disappointed.

Where is your holy space? How have you made is sacred?
