Making Hospitality a Priority
September 16, 2009 | Comments Off
We live in a hostile and lonely world. As one who has been a Christian and a leader for over 30 years, I forget this all to often. I’ve been blessed with many friends and excellent small groups. For the first several years of my Christian walk, I was with people almost every night of the week.
But my life wasn’t always like that. Before Christ, I was so lonely I thought I’d die. In fact, my challenge to God the evening I accepted him was, “OK God, you’ve got me. Now I want friends and I want them soon or I really will check out.” He answered within the week by plunking me into a very active Christian singles group. Within a month, I remember praying for an evening at home to do my laundry!
One of the things I appreciated early on was the hospitality of so many in the group. Someone was always opening their home for a small group, a potluck, a coffee hour, or just for fellowship. Some did this well; others not so well. In the process I learned a lot about hospitality and over the years have done more than my fair share of opening my home. Most of the time I take this for granted, but sometimes, when I host a challenging person, I remember how precious it is to be welcomed into someone’s home.
SmallGroups.com has just published a new resource called “Hospitality in Small Groups” for small group leaders. It features eight articles and a bunch of yummy recipes. Check it out.
