THE FCC REQUIRES THAT I TELL YOU: Some of the books I review here have been received from authors, publishers, or publicists. I receive more books than I can possibly read, and I only review books I've read, so receipt of a book is not guarantee or a review -- or of a positive review. I will generally only review books I believe my readers will enjoy or benefit from. If you're going to purchase a book and would like to help support this ministry, click on the book images and order through my Amazon Affiliate link. Thanks.

Life Transformed – The Importance of Small Groups – Part 4

August 12, 2009 | Comments Off

The Sandfords are strong advocates of small groups as a means of renewing the mind and spirit. They reinforce the need for wise counsel, “the continual, loving confrontations of brothers and sisters who love us too much to let us get by with our practiced deceits.”

This has been my experience. A small group devoted to helping one another grow and change is very different from a group meeting for almost any other purpose. This is why I’m such a stickler for small, closed groups.

The Sandfords say, “Our group must meet often enough, with regularity, having permission to accost us with truth in love, if we are to see incisively enough to learn to hate our minds’ deceptions. Unfortunately, many groups succumb to the god of niceness until too few tell one another the truth anymore. The carnal mind fights honesty, vulnerability, openness, and corporateness even as it fights prayer.”

They continue, “there is no other antidote to the pride and isolationism of our carnal mind than becoming determined to submit ourselves to the ministry of others, however faulty we my fear them to be.”
