“Our carnal mind and heart would rather plunge us into the depths of recurrent troubles than let go of its control of us and die.”

The Sandfords offer a fascinating take on the beliefs we harbor and give refuge to. He says, “The first lesson to be learned in the renewal of the mind is not to believe old carnal feelings and thoughts when they come back after prayers for healing.” They say these thoughts are only an echo of the old self, an “old, practiced habitual way sounding off again with no real intention or life behind it. It is not what you really feel or think – unless you believe it and give it life and power.”

They then give strategies for defeating these recurring thoughts. Think about this. We give our carnal, ungodly thoughts power by entertaining them. If we were to simply say, “That is not the thought I choose to think. The thought I choose to think is…..” how many problems would be avoided!

The authors say, “Perhaps the most difficult thing for Christians to learn is that just because they feel or think something doesn’t mean they really fell or thing that thing.” How’s that for revolutionary thinking? But in my experience, they’re right. We can choose to control our thinking and therefore our emotions.

This is the key to much of the defeat our challenging group members experience. We simply need to get our minds out of the rut!
