After vetting 893 questions and 343,203 online votes on the website of Mars Hill Church, one of the fastest growing churches in America, founding Pastor Mark Driscoll identified nine questions he most urgently needed to answer. He did this in a provocative book called Religion Saves + Nine Other Misconceptions. We are joining his blog tour to review and promote this book.

After an introductory chapter devoted to the misconception that religion is what saves us, Driscoll tackles nine controversial and often-misunderstood issues, including birth control, humor, predestination, grace, sexual sin, faith and works, dating, the emerging church, and the regulative principle. In each chapter, he’s hard-hitting, edgy, at times caustic and irreverent, yet always theologically sound. He provides excellent background data, well documented with extensive endnotes. I’ll keep this book as a handy reference for questions that come up in my group or ministry.

Driscoll’s no-holds-barred, tell-it-like-it-is writing style, like his preaching style, especially appeals to young urban professionals. He doesn’t try to be polite, but rather, seeks to make Jesus and Christianity real, accessible, and appealing to the postmodern generation. But if you’re a bit older, don’t be put off. I love listening to and reading Driscoll.

This book would be a great resource to help bring your group to maturity and to give them skills for grappling with these and other issues of the day. I’m not sure I’d use it for a seeker group, although it’s certainly a possibility. It does answer questions people ask…
