I just received my hard copy of The [expanded] Bible by Thomas Nelson, sent to me by Senior VP Wayne Hastings after reading my review of the PDF version. It’s an amazing resource, and I can’t wait to test drive it. It offers all the features I mentioned in the earlier post in a hefty 608-page hard cover book – New Testament only.

Given the size, it’s probably not going to be the Bible I carry to church, but I think it will come in handy at our small group, which is always asking, “I wonder what the Greek word really means?” when faced with various translations. Unfortunately, since it’s New Testament only, I’ll still have carry a complete Bible. And I’m not sure I’d have the strength to carry both an Old and New Testament [expanded].

Despite the size, I think it will be an amazing study tool, including word studies, translation helps, cross references, and cultural notes right within the text. It could be a good devotional tool, depending on how you like to read Scripture. Being more of the scholarly bent, I’m always stopping to look up a word or cross-reference, so this could be very handy. The presence of all of the notes slows the reading process, which I think could be a good thing. It should make be pause, ponder, and reflect.

I’ll keep you posted as I use it. This could to a great small group resource! Thanks Thomas Nelson. Oh, it should be in bookstores in August.
