Four Types of Groups–Part 4

Action Groups

An action group is one that comes together for a different purpose, but that incorporates many of the elements of small groups, especially community. For example, a choir can be a choir, or a choir that shares a brief Bible study, prayer requests, or care for one another. This type of group is perfect for guys. There has been some interesting work done on the feminization of the church and how our typical small groups are often too touchy-feely for men. How about getting a group of guys together to run, workout, work on cars, or do household services for the elderly or single moms. After the action, they can meet for coffee and an effective leader can bring the discussion around to spiritual things. These groups can be open or closed, depending on the focus.

Advantages

These are effective groups for people who don’t like the traditional group format, especially for men who want to do rather than talk.

They are a way of letting the church be the church through service.

Disadvantages

It takes a strong, effective leader to mange the “group” aspect of these groups. Otherwise, they can remain pretty shallow.
