Greg has a great article on developing apprentices for small groups at Dying of Thirst. He uses the acronym FAITH, which I like a lot better than the FAT I used in my original list in my first book, Small Group Bible Studies: How to Lead Them (Standard Publishing, 1991).

He suggests that a leaders need to have and then look for these characteristics in apprentices:

Faithfulness– Is the potential apprentice dependable and trustworth?
Availability– Is the apprentice accessible and approachable?
Inspirational– Does the hopeful leader desire to serve and inspire others towards depth with God?
Teachability– Is there a willingness to learn and grow?
Humility– Are they broken and contrite?

I include these and a few more in my training session, Who Me? A Leader? I truly believe that this is one of the most important issues for leaders to address: replacing themselves with excellent new leaders.
