Character of a Good Appretice

September 20, 2007 |

Greg has a great article on developing apprentices for small groups at Dying of Thirst. He uses the acronym FAITH, which I like a lot better than the FAT I used in my original list in my first book, Small Group Bible Studies: How to Lead Them (Standard Publishing, 1991).

He suggests that a leaders need to have and then look for these characteristics in apprentices:

Faithfulness- Is the potential apprentice dependable and trustworth?
Availability- Is the apprentice accessible and approachable?
Inspirational- Does the hopeful leader desire to serve and inspire others towards depth with God?
Teachability- Is there a willingness to learn and grow?
Humility- Are they broken and contrite?

I include these and a few more in my training session, Who Me? A Leader? I truly believe that this is one of the most important issues for leaders to address: replacing themselves with excellent new leaders.
