Mary Schaller at SeekerMinistries offers a great quote by Elizabeth O’Connor, author of the classic Journey Inward, Journey Outward

“Modern psychology has made us aware that we become individuals in relationship with others and that where there is no genuine community the self is damaged and grows in crooked ways….when the church wakes again it will know that there can be no consequential change in the lives of people unless there is community.”

Amen! Amen! Jesus works through the Body of Christ. He has no other tools. The problem is, we are often too picky about who we want to be in community with, and the EGR (extra grace required) people are too often not in that group. A lot like junior high! So how do we deliberately love those who lack social skills or group skills? When we solve that problem, we’ll finally become the Body of Christ and become the workers who reap the harvest.

I’ve recently become acquainted with somebody who has become I know somebody who has become disillusioned by a cult after belonging to it for many years and wants to get out without sacrificing family and friends who are all members. I remembered your mention of the Spiritual Counterfeits Project in your book and passed on the contact information, which was greatly welcomed. I’d heard of that group years ago, but had forgotten all about it until you reminded me.

You may have helped to make a big difference in at least one person’s life, and possibly more.

Thanks, Jan. Glad to hear it. There are a lot of wonderful resources in the book, but Spiritual Counterfeits has been around for 30 years and was helpful when we dealt with cult members even then.
