In Why Didn’t You Warn Me? How to Deal With Challenging Group Members, I talk about the fact that God is bringing challenging people into the church—and into your small group—on purpose. Where else will they find the healing and maturity they need to become all God created them to be?

I also comment that the leader always grows more than the members. While we often wish we could have groups of perfect people, the reality is that God builds our character so much better when we grapple with challenges.

In a recent article in SpiritLed Woman, author T.D. Jakes talks about challenging people in the workplace and echos this belief.

God uses trials with difficult people to build our character and to increase our own store of maturity and wisdom. By attempting to avoid or ignore those who are so different from ourselves, we are often avoiding the very training that God has provided for us to advance to the next level. Be grateful when difficult personalities create challenges in your workplace [or your small group] and know that God is indeed equipping you for your future.

So the next time you wonder why you got this challenging person in your group, consider that God is building your character.
